Grasso was born in Brooklyn to Italian-American parents who hailed from Caltagirone, Sicily. He became involved in the Messina crime family as a young man, approached by Messina Capo Fredo Volpe. Grasso walked around Steinway in northern Brooklyn, where one day, he came across Ancelotti gunman Luis Lopez. Grasso took out his pistol, but Lopez shot him three times in the chest, killing him. His body was picked up by the NYPD after a crime scene developed.
