Gambling requires people to have a lot of money and confidence; if they wager a high amount of money, they can either win it or lose it all. Illegal gambling was key to the success of many Mafia bosses, as they did not need to buy a gambling permit and they could take a cut of the large amount of money put forth. The two most popular gambling spots in the 1940s and 1950s were Las Vegas in the United States state of Nevada and the city of Havana in Cuba, where the Mafia owned a large amount of casinos that became their sources of income. Famous people who muscled in on gambling where Lucky Luciano, Arnold Rothstein, Bugsy Siegel, Hyman Roth, Meyer Lansky, Michael Corleone, Rico Granados, Samuele Mangano, Esteban Almeida, Frankie Marino, Nathan Detroit, Vito Corleone, Salvatore Drago, and many others.
